Perched beside the River Thames with stunning views of the bridge and water, this spot captivates with its scenic riverside setting—ideal for unwinding over a drink or light meal as the sun dips low. Guests rave about the pleasant balcony vistas and relaxing vibe, though service can lag even in quiet moments, and vegetarian portions often leave diners wanting more. It's a charming retreat for Thames lovers, but opt for outdoor seating at your peril—watch out for spiders overhead.
Insider tip: Time your visit for sunset over the river and bridge with a lovely drink and meal—the views are magical.
Good location, great view of the River Thames. Service was very slow despite almost empty restaurant. Food was reasonable but very small portions of vegetarian option meant left still hungry.
The scenic views were pleasant. The service at the hotel leaves a lot to be desired.
Stunning setting alongside the River Thames. Great place to relax with a drink or a light meal.
Lovely drink and meal watching sunset over the river and bridge
Excellent food with great view, if sitting outside watch out for all the spiders above you!!
Our Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa is one of the finest 4-star Lake District hotels. Set on the shores of Lake Windermere — England's largest lake — our hotel offers the best of breathtaking scenery and exceptional facilities.
Perched on the shores of England's largest lake, this 4-star spa hotel delivers breathtaking scenic views that steal the show, with rooms like number 323 offering a full panorama over the water. Guests rave about the friendly staff, excellent food—especially with children—and indulgent afternoon tea laced with zesty lemon curd, though some note the building feels dated and service can falter. It's a prime spot for lakeside relaxation, blending classic charm with spa indulgence amid Cumbria's stunning fells.
Insider tip: Snap up a lake-view room for that jaw-dropping outlook—travellers swear it's the hotel's crowning glory.

Wonderful view, bad service and old hotel🥺.

Very good food and staff excellent really good with children highly recommended
You'll find the hotels of Macdonald Aviemore Resort resting at the very heart of the Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands. Stay in ancient Caledonian pine forests at one of our four distinctive hotels or our luxury woodland lodges & find the perfect room for your stay in our resort.
Resting in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, this resort immerses you in ancient Caledonian pine forests with four distinctive hotels and luxury woodland lodges tailored to every stay. Basic bedrooms feel slightly tired, so pack a good GPS to navigate the sprawling layout, but the real draw lies in the dining—lovely dinners at Aspects Restaurant or the Italian option shine as highlights amid mixed service vibes. It's a budget-friendly Highland base for nature lovers, perfect for expat adventurers seeking authentic Scottish wilderness without the polish.
Insider tip: Opt for dinner at Aspects or the Italian for a standout meal that redeems the basics.
Lovely dinner at Aspects Restaurant.
Basic bedrooms, slightly tired, bring a good GPS so you can find your room!
As unkind, unhelpful and bad Service as doesn't look like! Horrible don't ley ypur self go by The first impression
Try the Italian or Aspects for dinner
Unwind in our luxury 5 star hotel. With it's central location it's got good transport links as well as being close to the Jane Austen Centre, hot springs and the gorgeous Georgian architecture.
Escape to this luxury 5-star haven in the heart of Bath, where Georgian elegance meets modern indulgence just steps from the Jane Austen Centre and steaming hot springs. Guests rave about the underrated spa—think sauna, steam room, ice chamber, infrared, jacuzzi, and heated indoor-outdoor pools that offer a quieter alternative to Thermae Bath Spa, especially magical on chilly days. Savour decent restaurant fare and breakfast (opt in when booking), though some note salty dishes and dated rooms crying out for a refresh; watch for overpriced room service discrepancies.
Insider tip: Dive into the heated outdoor pool when it's cold outside—less crowded than the public spas and utterly bliss.
Breakfast is good, make sure you include it when you book
The hotel was dishonest and cheated. The final price of the coke charged for the room service was 10% higher and the bottle size was 40% smaller than what was stated in the menu in the room.
Very very slow reception - we waited nearly 30 mins every time we needed to speak to anyone. Hotel is very dated and requires renovation.
Lovely hotel. They don't do justice to the Spa on their website - there's a sauna, steam room, ice room, infra red, jacuzzi and indoor/outdoor pools. The bathroom in our room was beautiful.
This hotel is great, the spa is amazing! The heated outdoor pool is nice when it's cold outside, & it's less busy than Thermae Bath Spa. The restaurant food was good, though a little too salty for me.
In the serene Scottish Borders, this hotel promises a peaceful retreat amid rolling hills, but it falls short on delivering a seamless stay. Guests frequently lament the poor service, with staff in dire need of training to match the location's charm. Bedrooms suffer from terrible TV picture quality, stuck in an analogue haze despite the digital age— a frustration that dims any downtime.
Insider tip: Demand a room check for TV functionality on arrival, and politely flag service issues early to salvage your Borders escape.
Poor service! Staff need urgent training.
Get the Tvs in the bedrooms sorted, terrible picture like they forgot about the switch to digital down here
Hidden away in a quiet spot, this hotel and spa offers a mixed bag for weary travellers seeking respite. The new spa shines as the undisputed star, with guests raving about its amazing facilities, super friendly staff, and standout treatments like the best massage in years—a true treat for those craving proper pampering. Yet, it's not without flaws: overpriced rooms, awful food, and a rather depressing vibe due to sparse surroundings make it a polarising pick, best for spa die-hards who can overlook the rest.
Insider tip: Book the spa treatment first—it's what elevates the whole stay, with therapists delivering magic that outshines most spots.
Lovely Spa Retreat
Very overpriced, not great facilities. There are worse spas but there are also a lot better.
Food was awful, nothing around the hotel (apart from power plant) and generally a depressing place.
Super nice
The new spa is amazing! Very nice staff and so friendly really finishes the place off.... I had the best massage as most places aren't that great. Easily the best treament I've had in years....

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts is a privately owned Scottish hotel group with more than 30 properties across the UK and Spain — and a verified Macdonald Hotels promo code or multi-night deal can substantially reduce the cost of a 4-star spa break, countryside resort stay, or historic city hotel. Founded in Scotland with a strong leisure and spa identity, Macdonald operates everything from a riverside hotel on the Thames at Marlow to a highland resort in the Cairngorms National Park. BudgetFitter maintains verified Macdonald Hotels deals — the current offers, including 3 Nights for 2 B&B, are in the deals section above.
Macdonald operates a consistent 4-star positioning across its portfolio — full-service properties with restaurants, bars, leisure clubs, and spas at most locations. The group is particularly known for its spa and wellness facilities; a spa break at a Macdonald property is one of the stronger propositions in the UK independent hotel market at the price point. Properties range from resort complexes with outdoor activities and golf to intimate countryside hotels focused on food and relaxation.
Family-oriented resort properties — notably Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort — offer children’s activity programmes, multiple restaurants, and access to outdoor pursuits including skiing (winter), golf, and watersports. The Aviemore property is one of the most complete self-contained resort destinations in the UK, operating within the Cairngorms National Park.
Scotland is where Macdonald’s identity is most apparent. The Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort anchors the group’s Scottish offering — a large resort complex in the Cairngorms with a spa, golf course, and access to the Cairngorm Mountain ski area. The Macdonald Drumossie Hotel in Inverness is a four-star property near the city centre and the Battlefield of Culloden, well-suited to Highland touring guests. Several other Scottish properties cover Perth, Ayr, and Aberdeenshire.
In England, standout properties include the Macdonald Compleat Angler in Marlow — a historic riverside hotel on the Thames with a fine dining restaurant — and the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa in Bowness-on-Windermere, which offers 4-star accommodation with lake views in the heart of the Lake District. The Macdonald Windsor Hotel serves guests visiting Windsor Castle and the surrounding area. Macdonald Linden Hall Hotel & Spa in Northumberland is a country house hotel with extensive spa facilities and grounds popular for weddings and spa breaks.
The Spain portfolio — including Macdonald Leila Playa on the Costa de Almería — extends the group’s reach for UK sun holiday guests, with beach resort properties on the Andalusian coast. For comparison, Best Western Hotels has a broader UK network of independent-affiliated properties at a similar price tier, and Apex Hotels covers the Scottish city boutique market in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dundee for travellers who prefer urban-focused stays over resort properties.
Macdonald Preferred is the group’s paid membership programme, offering 10% off room rates year-round across all UK properties, a per-night food and beverage credit, and room upgrades subject to availability. For guests who stay at Macdonald Hotels more than a few times per year — particularly at resort properties where room rates and dining costs are both significant — the membership pays for itself quickly. It’s distinct from a standard loyalty points scheme: the benefits apply from the first qualifying stay rather than accumulating over time.
Macdonald’s 3 Nights for 2 deal — which applies the cost of a two-night B&B stay across three nights — is the most consistently available offer and one of the stronger multi-night propositions in the UK 4-star hotel market. The 4 Nights for 3 offer produces an even lower effective nightly rate for longer stays. Dinner, Bed & Breakfast packages at selected properties (including Windsor and the Compleat Angler) add half-board dining to the room rate at a significant saving compared to paying for dinners separately.
