Consumer Watchdog Guide: Basic vs Optima Fares, Baggage Dimensions and Madrid T4 Hub

Ensure a smooth departure and avoid airport surcharges with these practical guidelines from BudgetFitter:

• Understand Basic vs Optima Baggage Rules: ‘Basic’ fares include one 10kg cabin bag (max dimensions 56 x 40 x 25 cm) plus one small personal accessory; if you need 23kg checked luggage, choosing ‘Optima’ or adding bags online in advance saves up to 45% compared to paying airport check-in desk rates (£50+).
• Combine Iberia and British Airways Avios for Cheaper Redemptions: Transfer your British Airways Avios to your Iberia Plus account to book long-haul flights from Madrid to South America with significantly lower cash carrier surcharges and taxes than departing from London Heathrow.
• Navigate Madrid-Barajas Terminal 4 with Ease: Long-haul international flights depart from the Satellite Terminal (T4S); allow 20 minutes to take the automated underground transit train from main Terminal 4 to T4S.
• Check In Online 24 Hours Prior to Departure: Use the Iberia mobile app to check in, select seats, and download digital boarding passes to your Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.
• Enjoy Oneworld Sapphire & Emerald Lounge Access: Oneworld Sapphire and Emerald status holders enjoy priority check-in, fast-track security, 1 extra checked 23kg bag, and access to premium VIP lounges in London and Madrid.
